In Australia Zoo's birds section the staff take care of all the birds in the Rainforest Aviary, the Wetlands, emus, cassowaries and the raptors on display in the Birds of Prey Aviary. The bird staff are responsible for the food preparation for well over a hundred birds; they also do all of the enclosure maintenance, landscaping and observations of the birds, and give the Birds of Prey show every day. Brett also helps out flying the birds in the free flight bird show.
Carmen has been an active member of the bird section since early March 2004. Carmen does a great job in our Rainforest Aviary with her 'eagle eye' for observations and identifying the individual birds. You can often catch Carmen having a yak with the guests about the wonderful birdlife here at the Zoo and answering their questions. Carmen has three older bothers and an identical twin sister. We just hope that it is actually Carmen who turns up for work most days! Earlier this year Carmen graduated with a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Eco Tourism. In Carmen's spare time her interests include bird watching, bush walking, photography and paper craft.
Chris came to the bird crew in December 2005, after spending a year as a leaf-cutter at another zoo. Chris has a varied work background in hospitality, building and management, but has a strong passion for all animals. Although his true passion is crocs, he is enjoying his time in birds. Chris is finding each day more interesting and is always more than keen to get on the microphone and do the Birds of Prey show. We think he just likes the sound of his own voice. In his spare time Chris loves to play and watch all sport. He is a keen fisherman and is even trying his hand at surfing.
